I am so stoked that I can finally reveal my involvement in a unique and monumental project. Last spring, as we entered uncertainty due to COVID, I was contacted by my dear friend Michael Godard and asked if I would be interested in joining a team of artists tasked with providing art for the Las Vegas Raiders new home, Allegiant Stadium. As a rabid NFL fan, I jumped at the chance to work with this historic organization.
The art curated for the stadium represents the many aspects of Vegas life, and I was delighted to stay on brand when they asked me to paint legendary musical performers synonymous with Vegas, Mr. Frank Sinatra and Liberace.
My approach with these two pieces was to make them appear to be a set. Although they have different colour schemes and different orientations, I wanted the viewer to be certain that both were done by the same artist.
As for the concept–I wanted to focus on the vibe and swagger of Vegas in what I believe was its prime. The era of clean suits and dirty martinis. Frank smoking on stage in a tux and Liberace in fur perfectly encapsulated the feeling I was striving for. I also chose to portray them in black and white to help lend to that bygone era vibe. The background for these pieces was meant to reflect the patterned carpets and wallpaper often found throughout Las Vegas casinos and lounges.
Much like my two subjects, Mr. Mark Davis and his Raiders have stormed into Vegas, “and may I say, not in a shy way”. I’m looking forward to the day when I can once again experience the sights and sounds of Vegas, and to finally check out the amazing new stadium and the collection of art that now covers the walls.
